about

“Looking For Tomorrow, Today.” It is a collaboration of songs recorded all over the great state of Michigan, from beautiful farmstead studios, to basements on college campuses.

All the songs were written on a very personal level. I tried to focus on the human mindset of always being distant from the present. We are constantly looking towards our futures, and in doing so we often look past what is going on in the now. We get so caught by things that haven’t even happened yet. I am as guilty of this as anyone else. Each song on “Looking For Tomorrow, Today” looks beyond the present at the past, future, and places that fall somewhere else. I reflect on the places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, and those things that I haven’t crossed yet.

Track Name: Broken Boards
I drove the trail where you had picked flowers.
You put in your hair way after hours.
Your mom wants you home, but you’re out on the town.
And down by the lake.
We made up a fire for the storm.

Broken boards on ashes are all that I see.
You’re holding me through winter and brushing my cheek.

And I found the note you left in the foyer.
Down on the floor. My little lady.
And I got my name from running through tall trees.
And breaking some hearts.
And lying with ladies.

Broken boards on ashes are all that I see.
You’re holding me my lover and brushing my cheek.

Broken boards on ashes are all that I see.
You’re holding me my lover and brushing my cheek.
Track Name: Chains
River sewed shut with ice and snow.
The moon so bright yet barely full.
Lights out there from a distant world.
But I hold you tight and I hold you still.

And the chains they hold us down.
The chains they hold us down.
And pull us up. And pull us up.
And pull us up.

You were once his but I love him still.
When I’m far past dead in a ditch or hill.
Don’t go now there’s so much time.
To lay right here unfaith rewind.

And the chains they hold us down.
The chains they hold us down.
And pull us up.
And pull us up.
And pull us up.

And the chains they hold us down.
The chains they hold us down.
And pull us up.
And pull us up.
And pull us up.
Track Name: This, Old and Here
He was a young man dotted smart and free.
He went and he settled down as far as he could be.
He packed up the morning and he wrapped away the dawn.
The coyotes howling when they’d seen what he’d done.

My father is an old soul just like me.
My mother is as sharp as one could be.
We had an old house in the middle of our town.
Now it is falling down just like everything around.

You’re working your hands just to see if you get paid.
You fall asleep in the sun just to wake up in the shade.
The season is coming and that river calls my name.
The season is coming it will be gone before it came.

My father is an old soul just like me.
And my mother is as sharp as one could be.
We had an old house in the middle of our town.
Now it is falling down just like everything around.

He spend his nights in the middle of the woods.
His family’s out back and they wouldn’t if they could.
Move way back to that place for they came.
Move way back to the greyness and the strain.

His father was an old soul just like him.
And his mother was as sharp as the wind.
They had an old house in the middle of the woods.
Now it is not falling down just like everything around.
No it is standing it’s brilliant and sound.
Track Name: Old School Romantic
I know that you’re looking good.
Cause I saw some pictures of you.
I wish that I learned to write.
But I can never find time.

I wrote those words that I said to you.
About fourteen long months ago.
I drove down the old trail.
The trail where once had got lost.

So will I see you again?
In a rusted old car by the river we met.
So will I see you again?
In a rusted old car by the river I wept.

You rode down a train or two.
Bought some cigarettes and some booze.
You forgot what this meant to you.
This place just don’t look the same.

Blood thick like the morning dew.
And I’m heart throb just thinking of you.
Write me out and cross me out and black me out.

So will I see you again?
In a rusted old car by the river we met.
So will I see you again?
In a rusted old car by the river I wept.

In a rusted old car. In a rusted old car.
Track Name: For The Wolves
He got all his stripes from the guns he shot.
And he sang all his songs with the words he’s got.
And he’s talking to the girl that he’s got back home.
And he’s marking up some land that he thought he owned.

And he left it all.
He left all.
He left it all for the wolves.
The stars and the stripes.
The red, and blue, and white.
The guns that he shot and his god.

He went and got his girl and they left in fright.
Of the fiends in the air and the thieves at night.
And they’re passing that old bridge that they jumped as kids.
And they’re digging up the things that they once had hid.

And they left it all. They left all.
They left it all for the wolves.
The stars and the stripes.
The red, and blue, and white.
The guns that they shot and his god.

Silver lined glass on the lake outside.
Hiding from the world and hiding from the fire.
The curled up warmth and the choked out sound.
Of the father’s voice and the mother’s smile.
Track Name: (Howling) At The Moon
I’ve got a heart made of steel.
Forged in the tall towers that you built me.
I got different people. I’ve got different words.
And I saw children dancing. How did they hear?
And how did they hear?

I saw your face in the night.
So reached down and kissed you out of spite.
I met different people. And I sang different words.
I saw ladies dancing. How did they hear?

Down by the woods I heard.
Howling at the moon I heard.
Down by the woods I heard.
Howling at the moon I heard.

I’ll break my arm for these words.
If I’d thought that you’d hurt me with your curses.
I saw everybody looking at the sky.
Praying up to Jesus. Hell I though I died.
And hell I thought I died.
Track Name: Don't Change, My Plans
I drink coffee when I need to.
And I wake early in the summer time.
Whisper ballads on the battlefield.
Whisper ballads in the rain.

Don’t you change. Cause I’ve got plans.
To roam around.
The best I can.

Old pine pushing through the meadow.
The black dog running through the field.
My sister’s taking those picture in the yard.
The autumn’s fading with the snow.

Don’t you change.
Cause I’ve got plans.
To roam around.
The best I can.
Don’t you change.
Cause I’ve got plans.
To roam around.
The best I can.
Track Name: Looking For Tomorrow
Yesterday’s gone is it spring is it fall I don’t know.
The blood on the ground it is dry like the autumn leaves.
The bridge that we crossed it is closed two years ago.
The bridge that we crossed it is closed two years ago.

We’re just looking for tomorrow today.
Just looking for tomorrow today.

I dreamt a dream I was young now I’m old what’d you know.
The trees growing old in the snow God I’m cold God I’m cold.
I’ll be broke down and poor but I’ll sing but I’ll sing just to sing.
Down in the stream where we swam when we were just seventeen.

We’re just looking for tomorrow today.
Just looking for tomorrow today.
